Yes, yes. It’s that most wonderful time of the year again—diving into the exciting trends and predictions for Singapore’s interior design scene in the coming year. If I had to sum up 2024 in a single word, I’d say it feels muted—both in palette and design. People here are playing it safe. But with renovation costs surmounting and people selling their homes faster than they can actually settle in, it really isn’t that surprising. Still, for those of us who are looking to find bit more flavour, design wise, that is, 2025’s trends might bring you some cheer. So let’s take a look into our crystal balls to see what the interior design landscape in Singapore has in store for us.

1. Homes are turning into mini cafes and bars

With cafe and bar hopping a thing of ancient history thanks to rising living costs, we’re seeing a leap in homeowners actually transforming parts of their homes into spaces that resemble something out of a cafe or bar. This shift’s also partly because of covid, I think—that period convinced a lot of us that we could be our own barista and mixologist.

Now, how do these “cafes” and “bars” look like in the homes? Think open bars with dedicated shelves for spirits or long counters equipped with a barista-worthy espresso machine (and the 101 accessories associated with coffee-making). The great thing about having these “commercial” spaces in our homes is that they are extremely versatile, doubling up as workspace when necessary or an extra prep area for the kitchen. Plus, they are great for spaces entertaining guests. So even if your hobbies change over time, these spaces never feel like a waste of room.

2. People are blending interior design styles to stand out from the crowd

More homes are opting for safer colour palettes for 2025. So rather than fade into a background of beige-ness, folks are turning to blending two different interior design styles instead to stand out from the crowd. Forget sticking to just one aesthetic, homeowners and designers alike are pulling details from usually two distinct styles to whip up something fresh and fabulous. Take this home below for instance, which fuses Mid-century Modern with Japandi. Above, the home blends traditional Japanese design with the fuss-free Scandianvian style.

This may sound like eclecticism, which has been around since the beginning of time, but this trend really is more intentional than that. It’s about making sure that the uniqueness of each chosen style are highlighted, while ensuring that they still manage to harmoniously come together. The home below beautifully combines the bold, raw features of brutalism with sleek modernist touches. The secret to pulling it off? Repeating certain details and using a neutral backdrop. That, and having an interior designer with a good eye for design obviously.

3. Backsplashes are now seen as storage

In the ever continual hunt for more storage space in our perennially small homes, we have now turned to the backsplash as a possible storage candidate. It used to be that backsplashes are just splash guards against oil stains and water spills. Now? They are legit storage solutions, complete with slim shelves for cups or full-blown spice racks. Nice.

4. Curves are here to stay… but they are being reimagined in new and exciting ways

Curves are now such a prevalent feature of homes in Singapore that I can hardly recall a time when they weren’t part of the design landscape. It used to be incorporated in subtle, simple ways like having an arch entryway or rounding the edges of tables. Now I’m seeing it in really innovating ways.

Some ideas I’ve seen include flowing floor transitions, curved beams and columns, and the graceful bending of feature walls in masonry work and carpentry. They really do enhance the mood of a space giving it a warm and welcoming feel that almost feels like a hug. So it’s no wonder that curves are going to remain a popular feature!

5. We're circling back to circle cut-outs

This is possibly a subset of the continuing curved trend, but I thought it deserved an entire section of its own because I am seeing a lot, a lot of it. You know how windows used to have edges? Apparently, someone didn’t get the memo and now homes in Singapore are sprouting out internal circle windows.

Depending on the rest of your interior design style, they kinda make your home look like a submarine or a cute cottage, both very different vibes, which shows you just how versatile they are. Absolutely love them, by the way, because of how quick they can change up the look of your interior. Just like that.

6. And flooding lights in with (faux) skylights

Skylights used to be something you’d mainly find in shophouses and landed homes, but now they’re making their way into apartments too. While we can't install real skylights in our HDBs or condos, many homeowners in Singapore are embracing the idea of faux skylights by adding false ceilings.

At best, they add a lovely, almost ethereal glow to your space, and at the very least, they provide an extra source of light. What’s not to love? My tip? Throw in a faux plant just below the skylight for added believability.

7. We predict that pebbled entryways are going to rock the design world this year

We've come across pebbled indoor gardens that really create a calming vibe in a home, and we've even spotted some HDBs featuring pebbled bathrooms. But now, pebbled foyers are making waves as the latest trend in home design. It makes perfect sense—foyers are the first thing guests see when they step inside, so it's important to make a great impression.

People are really starting to focus on their entrances, and adding pebbles to your foyer instantly brings a sense of tranquility AND that wow factor. Plus, it beautifully blurs the line between the outdoors and indoors. Sure, cleaning's going to be a bit of a pain, but hey, as long as it slaps, it's worth the effort, right?

8. And glass blocks are back, baby!

Or have they never left?

Glass blocks in interiors aren’t new, but there seems to be a resurgence in Singapore homes using them. They add a bit of whimsy and offer up a hint of nostalgia, often being used as dividers. Glass blocks are fantastic as them too, because they allow for a fair amount of privacy without completely obscuring the light—great if you want to let in a bit of natural light to the space. Besides dividers, I’ve also seen them being more decorative and even as furniture.

9. More thought is given to the dining area

Once an afterthought, dining areas are now getting more attention in the overall home design in Singapore. I don’t know if it has to do with more people dining/entertaining at home or people realising the importance of mindful eating, but whatever the reason, I am liking this trend.

Dining areas shouldn’t just be spots for a table and chairs; they’re spaces where people come together and connect, and have conversations. There’s just something about sharing a meal in a comfortable setting that brings people closer.

Some homeowners are turning entire spare bedrooms in their HDB flats into dining rooms. For those who are short on space, I'm seeing creative space-saving solutions like built-in dining benches and using arches to carve out a separate dining zone.

10. And TikTok is informing us that they are low-key obsessed with groovy, wavy mirrors

This one’s a home decor trend that probably stemmed from TikTok—wavy mirrors! If you want a home that feels like it’s on trend for 2025, get a wavy mirror. Most homes in Singapore use them in the bathroom, but I think a full-length one would work really well in the bedroom or even as a focal piece in the living area.

They work exceptionally well in more eclectic and Mid-century Modern styles, but I reckon they can work in any sort of interior design since you can get them in any colour and a variety of materials. For instance, a wood-framed one would work in a Scandinavian home, whereas you can pair a bright red one with blue and yellow to get a primary colour theme going.

11. Bathrooms are also becoming more accessible (and spa-like!) with built-in benches

I’m totally on board with making our homes more accessible, and built-in shower seats are a great way to do that. They’re really helpful for anyone who has trouble standing for long periods, and for the rest of us, they serve as a handy spot for scrubbing between our toes. Plus, they really bring that spa-like vibe to the bathroom, don’t you think?
